Duch on Trial

Duch on Trial, KMF's weekly programme on the first Khmer Rouge trial, will return to Cambodia's TV screens for a four-week run from the end of July 2010. The judges will give their long-awaited verdicts and sentences (if any) on Monday 26 July.

The British Government, through the Foreign Office, have funded most of the Duch on Trial programmes. Hugo Ellis visited Cambodia, inter alia, to check taxpayers' money was being well spent. KMF's Tom Som & Hugo Ellis, War Crimes Section, UK Foreign Office (6 Oct 2009)

During its eight-month broadcast run, KMF’s Duch on Trial became a 'must-see' programme for Cambodians.

The half-hour summaries and analysis attracted audiences of between two and three million on CTN, Cambodia’s number one TV channel.

Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch, was head of the Khmer Rouge’s secret prison, S21, sometimes called Tuol Sleng. He was charged by the ECCC (Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, an International-Cambodian hybrid court supported by the UN) with ‘Torture’, ‘Murder’, ‘War Crimes’ and ‘Crimes Against Humanity’.
Following the success of Time for Justice, a series of pre-trial TV films explaining the workings of the ECCC to ordinary Cambodians, KMF was hired by the Hawaiian-based East-West Centre to make Duch on Trial. The project was funded British Embassy in Phnom Penh.

Eight programmes were originally commissioned. But as the trial progressed, the series was extended several times. The final tally of 22 episodes covered all the court's proceedings, and a pre-verdict village-based discussion programme.

Funding is likely to be forthcoming for three concluding programmes in the Duch on Trial series.

All 22 episodes can be viewed at East-West Center’s website .
